Edward by Manuel Marsol belongs to the MVSEVM series and is part of the illustrations he made for the picture book MVSEVM published by Fulgencio Pimentel in 2019.
MVSEVM came from the close collaboration of two famed Spanish artists of national and international prestige. Javier Sáez Castán (National Illustration Award, 2016) and Manuel Marsol (Bologna Fair International Prize for Illustration, 2017). Both illustrators were interested in creating a joint project, a picture book based on a story of Javier’s illustrated by Manuel. The final result was MVSEVM, awarded at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2020 with the Best Picture Book Award in the Cinema Category.
Edward is the cover of this picture book in which painting and cinema play a fundamental role. The character himself who looks at us through the rearview mirror does so with the eyes of the American painter Edward Hopper, the indisputable protagonist of this work whose colors, trees and road lead us to his painting Gas (1940); the house in the background reminds us to his House by the railroad (1925); and the interior of the car shows us a bit of his Jo in Wyoming (1946).
In the same way, the broken down car on the road near a house on the hill evokes Hitchcock cinema and tells us that this story has only just begun.
